Sooners butt kick Bedlam, win Big 12 championship and likely playoff berth

Tyler Workman - AP

Oklahoma won the Big 12 championship on Saturday and it wasn’t even close. The No. 5 Sooners manhandled the No. 9 Cowboys 58-23.

Baker Mayfield three two TD passes and ran for another. An average day for the once walk-on QB for the Sooners.

But there was a big-time atmosphere in the air — with ESPN College Gameday set up on campus and the nation’s attention on Bedlam, which this year was the defacto Big 12 conference championship game.

Jordan Thomas, who intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown, said. “Obviously, this game — we don’t need anyone to tell us it’s a big game. We don’t need anyone to tell us that it’s a game we have to play our hearts out in. But this one? I could tell. I knew our guys were ready and I knew what we were playing for.”

After the game, Coach Bob Stoops said he hadn’t heard that Notre Dame lost to Stanford. Notre Dame was the only other team anticipated to perhaps challenge Oklahoma for one of the four playoff seeds, even though the Sooners were elevated to the No. 3 spot by the CFP committee last week. The Irish lost to Stanford.

“You just figure if you’re third and you go to a championship game away from home to the No. 9 team in the country and win by 30-some points, whatever it was, you would only move up, possibly, but you sure wouldn’t move back,” Stoops said.

With a bat of the hand, Sooners hold on to Big 12 and playoff chances

Oh. My.

With one batted ball, the Sooners will play for the Big 12 Championship on Saturday in Stillwater.

That wasn’t so certainly in the final moments of the OU-TCU game on Saturday. But Steven Parker made it happen.

Parker batted away a 2-point conversion attempt by TCU in the closing seconds of Oklahoma’s 30-29 hang-on-for-dear-life victory over TCU Saturday night.

TCU had a chance to tie the game after Kohlhausen’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Emanuel Porter with 51 seconds remaining. Instead, Horned Frogs Coach Gary Patterson called a 2-point conversion play, but it was turned away by Parker.

“I just had a hard decision between staying on my receiver and coming to get the quarterback,” Parker said. “And I kind of just played in between, and just timed my jump right. It’s probably my most memorable moment in my football career.”

Sooners scorch Cyclones 52-16, and now the tough tour begins

The really hard games begin next week.

But first the Sooners dispatched Iowa State, 52-16 in a game that saw Oklahoma come out strong, then go to sleep in the second quarter, and then end the game like gang-busters.

Baker Mayfield threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another.

The Sooners, ranked 15th in the first College Football Playoff poll, finish the season with No. 6 Baylor, No. 8 TCU and No. 14 Oklahoma State.

OU jumped out to a 21-3 lead, but were held scoreless in the second quarter, allowing Iowa State to trim into the margin with a pair of field goals.

But the Sooners scored on their first five second-half possessions to blow out the Cyclones. Both Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon had touchdown runs in the second half.

Trevor Knight, on in relief of Mayfield, threw a 55-yard touchdown to Mark Andrews.
