Sooners lose Lubbock OT slug fest, 51-48

by

Oklahoma’s exhausting 2022 regular season is over.  Thankfully.

After an arduous back and forth battle that saw the Sooners lose 51-48 in overtime to Texas Tech, we are all scratching our heads trying to figure out what went wrong this year.

Was it the defense? At times that squad showed the mark we expected from defensive-minded new head coach Brent Venables, but at others times, including during the same game, this squad looked like it wouldn’t beat a 3A high school team.

Was it the offense? At times QB Dillion Gabriel couldn’t connect with receivers, and halfway through the season we decided offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby was intentionally avoiding mid-distance passing routes in Gabriel’s quiver because of his inaccuracy. But then, he would toss beautiful 77-yard passes to Marvin Mims for touchdowns, as he did on Saturday night against Texas Tech.

Was it the coaching? At times we were sure Jeff Lebby was using some sort of Wheel of Fortune to decide plays. At other times his play calling was brilliant (when it worked).

Regardless of what it was, the last three games — two losses and one important Bedlam win — were microcosms of the season. And they lead us to conclude, at the very least, that Venables first year was as near a disaster as OU fans could stomach, even for a first-year head coach that brought thousands to the airport on the night he was named head coach.

Dave: Sooners get momentum with Bedlam win, but play calling is unbelievable

Probably the most frustrating double digit win I have ever seen.

How the Sooners can go from one of the best offensive quarters in recent history to utter incompetence for the rest of the game, is beyond me.

It started out so great. I was so looking forward to a 56-13 beat down of the pokes that I was sure was coming after our explosive start.

But either the offense relaxed so much they lost their edge, or osu made the perfect adjustments, because the Sooners were shutout for that last 3 quarters of the game.

Maybe worse than the lack of scoring after that first quarter, was the complete incompetence in game and time management at the end of the fourth quarter.

Several takeaways from OU-TTech game — but only one counts: a team win

A Marine in full parade dress uniform and carrying an American flag sprinted out of the tunnel to lead the Sooners football team onto Owen Field on Saturday afternoon.

A 19-year-old freshman quarterback starting only his third game threw for 402 yards and six touchdowns.

A pre-season Heisman candidate benched at mid-season amid social media criticism came off the bench to a standing ovation and threw a 42-yard touchdown pass on only his second play in the game.

A team promised to be a playoff contender looked like it for the first time this season — nine games into the season.

Those were the takeaways from a 52-21 Oklahoma win over Texas Tech in Norman.

“Fantastic team win,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said.
