Bedlam bust for Sooners

by

The Sooners were unable to overcome three turnovers, despite its defense making two 4th down stands and limiting a Heisman-candidate running back, and lost 27-24 to Oklahoma State in the last Bedlam matchup for the foreseeable future.

The truth of the 2023 season is Oklahoma has made great improvement from a dismal 2022 season, but they are still a step away from competing for a conference championship or contending for a college football play off spot.

Most importantly, their talent level across the board, leaves very little margin for error to allow them to shrug off key turnovers against a well-coached team like OSU.

Or to overcome two controversial (non) pass interference calls (or no calls), one of kept Drake Stoops from scoring would would likely have been the winning touchdown in the last minute.

Dave: Sooners will need more than lightening in a bottle to win last Bedlam matchup

Before the season started, I would have told you that a 9-3 outcome would be a great record in Brent’s
second year. Anything better than that would be amazing.

Now, I must admit I got caught up in the National Championship dreams just like a lot of Sooner fans.

After going 7-0, even with a close call against UCF, I still thought there was a good chance OU could go undefeated this year.

Dreams of 2000 lingered in our collective heads. Second year of a new head coach. Left-handed quarterback. We were reaching with the similarities but hoping that we would catch lightning in a bottle a second time.

However, sloppy play and even worse play calling put a stop to that last Saturday in Lawrence.

Dave: Sooners get momentum with Bedlam win, but play calling is unbelievable

Probably the most frustrating double digit win I have ever seen.

How the Sooners can go from one of the best offensive quarters in recent history to utter incompetence for the rest of the game, is beyond me.

It started out so great. I was so looking forward to a 56-13 beat down of the pokes that I was sure was coming after our explosive start.

But either the offense relaxed so much they lost their edge, or osu made the perfect adjustments, because the Sooners were shutout for that last 3 quarters of the game.

Maybe worse than the lack of scoring after that first quarter, was the complete incompetence in game and time management at the end of the fourth quarter.
