What to look for in the new college football season

Justin Fuente

Former OU QB Justin Fuente is the new head coach at Virginia Tech.  It seems like Frank Beamer was going to be the coach there until the 22nd century. It will be cool to follow the Sooner Hokie this year. A key game will be September 10 when Va Tech takes on Tennessee in the “Battle of Bristol”.

They are converting NASCAR’s Bristol Motor Speedway into a football stadium (11,000 tons of gravel are being hauled in to form the base of the new field) for the game.

College fans from outside the state will be able to fly into Stillwater Airport on one of two daily flights American Airlines has begun from Dallas-Fort Worth to Poke-ville. For those West Virginia fans who follow the Mountaineers around the conference that gives them another travel option when coming to Oklahoma.

Trevor Knight will start at QB for the Texas A&M Aggies. Fox Sports writer Aaron Torres said Knight’s positive personality he brought to College Station is akin to that of Tim Tebow. That might be the last time Knight is compared to Tim Tebow; but, we get it. Knight is an uplifting guy in the locker room and in practice. Unfortunately that did not translate into great play on the field during his time at Oklahoma (except for one marvelous Sugar Bowl performance). Watch him and wish him good luck, nonetheless.

OU Alum and former tight end Chris Hammons is competing in this season’s version of “Survivor” on CBS. Hammons, 38, is an Oklahoma City trial lawyer now, but was a tight end of the Sooners from 1998 through 2000 (and captain on the National Championship team). Hammons is on the Gen-X team in “Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X”. “I love competition and I just see Survivor as the ultimate game and the ultimate competition,” Hammons said.

Steve Spurrier Jr. is back on the OU coaching staff.  Spurrier was a part of the original Stoop’s team  from 1999 to 2001 when he coached wide receivers. He spent the last 11 years coaching receivers at South Carolina for his father, Steve Spurrier.  Spurrier, Jr. is an off-field offensive specialist and director of high school recruiting for the Sooners this year.

Oklahoma is among the eight college football programs deemed “Blue Bloods” by ESPN — i.e., the most important programs in college football history. A unanimous selection by all 12 ESPN writers, with Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State and USC.
