Dave: Losses getting hard to stomach

by

DAVES-LOGO-copyWell the offense and the defense had let us down several times this season, so I guess it was the special team’s turn.

Two missed field goals, both inside 35 yards and one inside 20 yards. Hard to believe that Michael Hunnicutt would have missed one of those, let alone both. Throw in a blocked extra point (not his fault) and you leave seven easy points on the field.

More than enough to turn a one-point loss into a hard fought win. And this isn’t even mentioning Knight’s terrible decision on the pick six. Four plays. Effectively handing Kansas State 14 points and the win. You gift wrap Bill Snyder 14 points and you’re done. Don’t care who you are.

Now I say this loss was on the special teams, but in reality everyone had a hand in it. The aforementioned Knight pick six at the goal line. And don’t pin that one all on Knight. What the hell kind of play call was that in the shadow of your own goal line?

Mike is badly out thinking himself and in the process has taken away the aggressiveness for which his defenses are known.

I know Knight had to read the defense and not make that throw, but why even have that option so close to your goal? Terrible call by Josh Heuple.

And I don’t know what Mike Stoops is doing on defense. How many times did Striker drop into coverage? Why isn’t Striker rushing the QB ON EVERY PLAY?!?

Hunnicutt misses rare FG attempt.

In my opinion Mike is badly out thinking himself and in the process has taken away the aggressiveness for which his defenses are known.

Anyway, it all added up to a loss that ended any hopes of OU making the first college football playoff. What we have left is what we have had the past several years. A two to three loss team trying to get into an upper tier bowl after the pre season aspirations of a National Title run have been dashed.

It will now be six years since OU played for it all and at least fifteen years since winning a National Title. I know that sounds like sour grapes from a spoiled fan, but a program like Oklahoma should be in the running at least every three to four years. And that isn’t happening anymore.

Like I said, with a program like Oklahoma, that pays the head coach five million plus a year, it’s getting harder to stomach.

But anyway we move on to Iowa St in Ames this Saturday morning. The line now has the Sooners a 16 point favorite. I have no idea where they are getting that. The Cyclones took both Kansas St. and Texas to the wire. The latter in Austin. They scored 45 points on a Texas team that OU was quite frankly lucky to beat this year.

While their defense is suspect, Offensive Coordinator Mark Mangino has their offense humming. Wouldn’t it be nice to have Mark back on the sidelines at Oklahoma?

So the old Worry Meter is at 95% this week. We will see if these guys still have a fire in their bellies or if they are ready to throw in the towel. With all that being said…BOOMER!!!  – Dave
