Dave: OU vs WVa – first real road trip is a tough one

Defense wins championships. But the offense sure needs to help out.
When the offense came out to receive the ball to start the third quarter and promptly drove the field for a touchdown I thought, ok here we go. The route is on.

Unfortunately that was not the case. After that first drive of the second half, the offense pretty much went to lunch. Now my hope is that Stoops told Heupel to throttle back the rest of the night.

This game is in the bag. Don’t show anything else that could give future opponents a leg up in game planning. The defense will take it home. And this may very well be the case. The defense was in control with a 17 point lead.

That being said, the offense had so many 3 and outs, I think the defense was gassed by the middle of the fourth quarter. And Tennessee was within a few yards of cutting the deficit to 10.mini-2014-oklahoma-vs-west-virginia

But a 100 yard oskie for a touchdown finally shut the door. OU was probably not in any danger of ever losing the game, but the offensive struggles in the second half should give us pause.

OU vs. West Virginia this week

Consider this: The Sooners are only at 38% in converting third downs this season. And the average yards to gain on those third down attempts are over 7. The Sooners are facing too many third and longs. And not successfully.

This is not comforting going into Big XII play this Saturday in Morgantown. Don’t look now but West Virginia is not what everyone thought they would be. They’re much better.

Anyone remember Clint Trickett from the 2011 OU vs. Florida St. game in Tallahassee? He was the Seminoles’ back up QB who came in after current NFL QB E.J. Manuel was injured.

Trickett played much better than Manuel had that night and threw a 56 yard TD pass that tied the game in the fourth quarter.

Well, after transferring Trickett is now the senior starting QB for the Mountaineers. And he has their offense humming having thrown for over twelve hundred yards in three games. Now don’t get me wrong. Our defense is stout, but I think the offense is going to have to hold up their end of the deal if OU is going to be victorious Saturday night.

That means converting third downs and staying on the field for long extended drives. It also means punching it in for a touchdown rather than settling for a field goal. And they will have to do it without Keith Ford who has emerged as our best overall running back, who is out 3-4 weeks with a broken bone in his foot.

As such the worry meter is again at 75% this week. If Stoops did tell Heupal to close the playbook in the second half last Saturday, it’s now time to open it wide. With all that being said….BOOMER!!! – Dave
