Team getting worse, no more excuses for Sooners

DAVES-LOGO-copySeveral things came to mind while watching the debacle in Waco last Thursday night.

Foremost was what a waste of a spectacular defensive effort.  I know it sounds strange to say that when Baylor scored 41 points.  But I am convinced that if the Sooner offense had even remotely put up some sort of fight in that game, Baylor probably only scores in the twenties and OU has a great chance to win.

As it was, the offense was spectacularly inept.  At this point in the season a performance like that is just mind boggling.  This team has no offensive identity whatsoever.  And there is plenty of blame to go around but it has to start at the top.

Bob Stoops has to be the one to answer for this.  I know everyone is bashing Bell and Heupel, but ultimately I believe they are doing their jobs to the best of their ability.  And if this is the best they can do, then Stoops has to make a change

Does anyone bashing Bell and Heupel really think that those two guys are going to come out and say “Hey, I realize I’m not getting the job done so I’m going to step down for the the good of the team.” ?  No.

Stoops has to take responsibility because he is the head coach.  The head coach making almost $5 million a year.  Something needs to change.  Soon.  And please do not bring up the old argument that we as fans are spoiled and remember the Blake years and there are all kinds of teams that would love to be 7-2 blah blah blah.

Oklahoma is one of the top five programs in the history of college football.  We are not to be lumped in with schools who would love to be 7-2.

With our tradition and resources we expect more and should expect more.  Barry Switzer said it best.  “People don’t know what it is to be Champions.  Oklahoma invented it.”

Bob himself has said several times that the expectations at Oklahoma should be high.  We should expect to compete for Championships every year.

When he was hired 15 years ago he said he would operate under no excuses.  Look, I appreciate what Stoops has accomplished and I am not calling for him to be fired.  But Bob has not had a down year like this one.

Every other year under Stoops that OU was deemed to have been down or in rebuilding mode, the team always improved as the season went on. This time the team has gotten worse as the year progressed.  That is disconcerting to say the least.

Bob needs to get a hold of this program and bring it back to where he once had it.  Because we are slipping.  And at Oklahoma, that shouldn’t happen.

Moving forward, the Iowa State Cyclones blow into Norman Saturday morning for an early bird kickoff.  The Clones have only one win this season.  But they came close to upsetting Texas, Texas Tech and TCU.

That, along with the current state of the Sooner offense gives me pause.

But not enough to raise the worry meter past 20%.  Because if Iowa State pulls an upset this Saturday in Norman on Senior Day?  Well, I just don’t want to believe that’s a possibility.

With all that being said…BOOMER!!!!  – Dave
